Phase 1 of Scarborough Hospital opens for Easter

Health Minister Fuad Khan confirmed on Sunday that the Scarborough Hospital will open by Easter.

He made the decision followiwng meetings with the Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), Orville London, and THA Secretary of Health and Social Services Claudia Groome-Duke and Tobago Regional Health Authority officials.

Khan said the institution will open in phases with diagnostic services available from April 5. These include outpatient, pharmacy and laboratory services, as well as the radiology department with CT scans. The mortuary will also open during the initial phase.

Khan said the people of Tobago will soon have a first-class medical facility.

He aded that before long other services will be available. These include intensive care, cardiology, critical care medicine and other specialty services.

The hospital has been one of the more controversial projects handled by the Manning PNM administration. The project started under the Panday UNC government with a budgeted cost of about $130 million.

However under the Manning administration that escalated by hundreds of millions due to problems with the project, including allegations that construction materials were being illegally moved from the site to a private development.

During the election campaign in 2010 Kamla Persad-Bissessar promised to complete the hospital.
