Veteran journalist/communicator AFZAL KHAN dies at age 55

JYOTI is saddened to report the death of a friend and colleague, AFZAL KHAN, who passed away Sunday morning. He was 55.

His widow, Mala Khan, told JYOTI that the funeral is on Monday at 2 in the afternoon from the family home at 52 Grant Street, Couva to the Muslim Cemetery at Carli Bay, Couva.

Afzal was a communications and media professional who began his career in media at Trinidad & Tobago Television (TTT) in 1975. He was the Corporate Communications Manager at the Tourism Development Corporation (TDC).

His professional career included:
  • Television reporter/producer
  • Radio Talk Show Host
  • Corporate Director Marketing and Communications- Hindu Credit Union
  • Chief Executive Officer – HCU Communications Limited 
  • Publisher- HCU Publications Limited 
  • Chairman – Radio Shakti Limited 
  • Chairman – HCU Security Limited (April 2003- May 2006) 
  • Chairman- HCU Change Management Team 
  • Lecturer – Communications Module : UWI’s Institute of Business
  • Head of News, Sports and Current Affairs – International Broadcasting Network
  • Programme Director – Ministry of Information and Public Administration
  • Lecturer – Cipriani College of Labour and Cooperative Studies
  • Lecturer – UWI School of Continuing Studies LCCI Programme
  • Head of News, Sports and Current Affairs – Trinidad and Tobago Television Limited
  • Member of the Management Committee of the Caribbean Publishers and Broadcasters Association
  • TTT Representative at Caribbean Broadcasting Union
  • Consultant/Trainer – Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Corporation for the Caribbean
Afzal was named BWIA Journalist of the Year Award (1986) and Caribbean Broadcasting Union Journalist of the Year Award (1987).
