Murder #1: Man murdered in Laventille. 126 fewer homicides in 2011 than 2010

The year 2012 has recorded its first murder. The victim has been identified as Lloyd Marcano, 41, of Marcano Quarry, Laventille.

Police say Baptiste’s body was found behind a building in a puddle of blood. A woman, who identified herself as Baptiste’s niece told Newsday Baptiste was visiting a friend in the area.

“I honestly believe he was set up. Because he lost his home on December 14 after it was firebombed in Beverly Hills, they set him up," she said.

She added, "The thing is, he was never in anything. Yet they came for him. They didn’t get him then, but they burned down his house. They came back today and finished the job,” the niece said.

For 2011, there were 347 murders, the lowest figure in five years. Last year there were 473, meaning there were 126 fewer murders in 2011 than in 2010.

This was primarily due to the State of Emergency, which lasted from August 21 to December 5, 2011.
