SoE, Curefew to remain unchanged: PM Kamla

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar told reporters Thursday she is leaving the State of Emergency (SoE) and the 11pm to 4 am curfew unchanged based on advice from the security agencies.

She made the point at the Post Cabinet media conference at the Office of the Prime Minister. She said the members of the security agencies spent several hours briefing cabinet.

Persad-Bissessar said the security agencies reported that both measures have been “valuable tools in the fight of crime”. She added that the agencies are putting measures in place to fight crime when the SoE ends.

The Prime Minister also said there would be a National Security Operations Centre (NSOC) through which all members of law enforcement agencies will share information.

Pewrsad-Bissessar provided the media with statistics to show a dramatic decline in crime since the start of the emergency.

She noted that up to 8 am Thursday security personnel have arrested 3,932, including 57 persons in connection with homicides.

She said there were 15 murders in the first month of the curfew, a figure that she said is "15 too man". However she said it represents a 70 per cent drop over the average of 45 murders a month.
Persad-Bissessar also thanked all those who offered prayers and sent well wishes during her recent illness.

And she congratulated the scholarship winners and the Trinidad and Tobago cricket team.
