PM Kamla has diabetes, hypertension

PM Kamla spoke with reporters after her discharge from hospital
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar was in high spirits when she left the St Clair Medical Centre Friday morning following a two-day stay during which doctors conducted several tests.

She spoke to reporters about he medical condition and revealed that she is diabetic and also suffers from hypertension.

She said that's one reason why she had a negative reaction to one of the tests, which doctors conducted after she was admitted to hospital on Wednesday.

A dye used in the test caused a sudden drop in her blood pressure during a CT scan. That caused the medical team to keep Persad-Bissessar in hospital for observation for an extra day.

"It was a very scary thing, I must say, when I reacted badly to the dye and they felt it best to keep me," Persad-Bissessar said.

She said the negative effect of the dye left her weaker than when she was admitted to the hospital.

Persad-Bissessar said the doctors felt it best to "tweak" her medication to treat her diabetes and hypertension.

"People my age should have check ups every year and I have not had one in quite a while," she admitted. "I was told to take it quietly next week, but I am fine," she said.

Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan said it's not uncommon for patients to have negative reactions to the dye injections for CT scans. He said it's so common that doctors are always medically prepared to deal with those cases.
