Court frees 7 detainees after state fails to present evidence

Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar on Monday set seven men free after the State failed to present any evidence against the men.

Police had identified two of the men as "major players" who were connected to gangs.

The magistrate freed Vaughn "Sandman" Mieres and Cassius "Cass" Williams and five others after State prosecutor George Busby told her Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard had determined that there was insufficient evidence in order to successfully prosecute the matters.

He said based on that the prosecution would file notices of discontinuance.

Sixty people who were detained during the State of Emergency on various charges have now been freed for lack of evidence.

Attorneys representing the men said their clients intend to file civil action against the State for malicious prosecution.
