Trinidad & Tobago is celebrating the 100 birth anniversary of Dr Eric Eustace Williams, the country's first Prime Minister.
Williams became T&T's first Chief Minister following the general elections of 1956 and led the country to independence in 1962, becoming the first Prime Miinister.
On August 1, 1976, a new constitution was proclaimed, making Trinidad & Toabgo a democratic republic within the Commonwealth, with a President replacing the Queen as head of state.
Republic Day was proclaimed on September 24 to coincide with the convening of the first Republican Parliament. September 24 is also the date that Williams won his first election in 1956. He remained in office until his death in 1981.
