Minister of Foreign Affairs and Communications Dr Surujrattan Rambachan told officials of the Organisation of African Unity over the weekend Trinidad & Tobago would like to have permanent observer status with their organisation.
Rambachan made the point when he addressed a diaspora meeting of the Ministerial Committee of the AU at the United Nations in New York. He also noted that Caricom is seeking membership in the AU.
Rambachan said Trinidad & Tobago wants closer links with African nations and “would welcome the establishment of more resident African diplomatic missions” in Port-of-Spain.
He said his country can assist African nations in oil and gas exploration and exploitation.
Rambachan told the group Nigeria has already started to explore oil and gas opportunities in T&T and will be sending about 100 people to the country for training in skills related to the oil industry.
He added that a delegation from Mozambique has said it wants to visit to the country to "examine our model for the monetisation of gas.”
