SoE tally - 1505 arrested; sophisticated guns seized

The latest report on the State of Emergency shows that a total of 1,505 persons have now been arrested with 28 people being detained in the 24 hours ending at 8 am on Wednesday. Three of the people arrested in the latest roundup are alleged to have gang connections.

Of the total number of arrests to date 435 are gang related. Here's a breakdown of the others:

  • 279 - drug offences
  • 348 - serious offences
  • 036  - homicide investigations
  • 099  - breach of curfew
  • 038  - enquiries
  • 241  - traffic offences
  • 270  - outstanding warrants

Police and soldiers have also seized 1,829 rounds of ammunition, five magazines and 58 illegal firearms.

Officials said Wednesday they have made a major breakthrough with the confiscation of five "very sophisticated" weapons that entered the from Thailand.

Customs officials found the guns Tuesday night at the TTPost location near the Piarco International Airport.

A spokesperson described the weapons as"powerful guns are used in assassinations".

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar told reporters Wednesday there has been a 400% increase in the confiscation of guns since the State of Emergency was declared on August 21.
