Police deny permission for 'Heritage Sammelan'; Hanoomanisngh says it's victimisation

Hans Hanoomansingh is upset that after spending $100,000 to promote his annual "Heritage Sammelan" scheduled for Saturday 24 Septmeber (today) police have denied him permission.

Hanoomansingh is chairman and CEO of Heritage Radio 101.7, which hosts the annual event. He held a media conference at his radio station Friday to update the media on what's happening with the event.

He said the planwas for the gathering to be from two in the afternoon until eight pm, which would have allowed everyone three hours to get home ahead of the nightly curfew.

However he said police denied permission due to fears of a homicide taking place during the event.

Hanoomansingh was angry at the decision because he said it reeks of victimisation since other organisations are holding events this weekend and other large events had already taken place with no denials from the police.

He explained that what is worse is that he had received verbal permission for the event from the head of the police central division, Supt. Ramsey, for the Sammelan in Chaguanas. "I even asked for permission in writing and he said it was not necessary," Hanoomansingh told reporters.

He said on September 21 Deputy Commissioner of Police Mervyn Richardson, who told him that the event would not be allowed, citing certain sections of the current curfew restrictions.
