A Nigerian national who lives in manchester, England has been arrested and charged with illegally transporting cocaine in his stomach.
Offcials said Friday the man was detained at Piarco International Airport on September 17 as he was about to board a flight. Customs officials sent him to the Eric Williams Medical Complex where x-rays showed foreign objects in his stomach.
Officials kept him under surveillance at the hospital where he eventually excreted 47 pellets of cocaine weighing nearly one kilo.
The dug has an estimated street value of TT$344,000. The man was later charged with attempting to smuggle an illegal drug and will appear before a magistrate in Arima to answer the charge.
Recently a Trinidad & Tobago national was arrested in England under similar circumstances, attempting to carry cocaine into England. He told customs officers he was going to England to attend his sister's wedding but when officials checked with the lady she said she was not getting married.
Officials eventually sent the man to hospital where it was discovered that he had ingested the cocaine, which he eventually passed out. He was charged and sent to jail.
