Another PP promise kept; Biche high school opens

During he general election campaign in 2010 the People's partnership promised to open the Biche High School that was built during the Panday UNC administration when Kamla Persad-Bissessar was Education Minister.

On Monday the school opened for the first time since it was built for $30 million.

The school was never opened because of claims that the site was unstable and the air was dangerous due to gas and oil emissions.

When the Manning PNM administration came to office it refused to open to=he school.

However the new government conducted tests and has said it ios now satisfied that the building is safe. Education minister Tim Gopeesingh told reporters several geophysical studies have been done and they show that there is no land slippage and that the air quality is good.

The school is starting off with about 100 students from forms one to three. Sixty pupils have been transferred from schools in Manzanilla and other communities.

Gopeesingh said 256 school repair projects were carried out across the country during the two month vacation, adding that all the projects were within budget. Only eight schools did not open Monday due to delays in completing repairs.

The minister said he is satisfied with the work done on the schools and promised that they will be opened by the end of the week.
