UNC backs PM Kamla on emergency, urges all members to stand behind political leader

The United National Congress issued a statement Wednesday calling on all members of the party to give their full support for political leader and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar in the fight against crime.

The statement is signed by the chairman of the party Jack Warner, who stated that as Chairman of the party he full supports the current State of Emergency and the limited curfew, which was instituted by the People’s Partnership Government.

"I also want to take this opportunity to encourage every member of the United National Congress to join the forces of good in support of this initiative whose sole objective is the restoration of peaceful communities across Trinidad and Tobago," Warner added.

"For too long the good people of this country have become the defenceless victims of predators who have preyed upon us and robbed us of the normalcy of life for which our forefathers have fought," he said.

"For too long we have been living in fear, have become prisoners in our own homes under a self imposed curfew because the thugs who live among us determined the quality of life which we must enjoy.

"In a bold strategic move the People’s Partnership Government under Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar decided to bring an end to this siege which far too long has destroyed the social fabric of our society by instituting a 15 day period during which the State has been placed under the Emergency Powers Act.

"The purpose of this strategy is to wrest our communities from those who choose to establish illegal border lines across our country. Disarm the bandits who have been ruthlessly determining by the power of the gun who should live and who should die and re-instituting justice by empowering the legitimate authorities to act on our behalf.

"The purpose of this strategy is to allow our people to walk freely in their neighbourhood; to permit our young women to grow up in a society where their dignity is not threatened or destroyed by men seeking arbitrary power over them and to guarantee that our young men mature in societies free of negative peer pressure forcing them into gangs to engage in disruptive behaviour.

"These are just a few of the specific objectives to be achieved by this strategy which was carefully designed by our Political Leader and Prime Minister, the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who must be applauded for taking an initiative that others should have taken years ago.

"In this regard, I want to encourage all members of the United National Congress to join with me and the People’s Partnership Government and stand behind our Political Leader in making a determined effort to take back our country. Now is not the time to criticize or condemn but to put our shoulders to the wheel to salvage our country and create a reformation that will make us and our posterity proud.

"Let us work together, let us work both hard and smart. Let us stamp out the evil among us and hand in hand let us work tirelessly to complete the job of bringing peace and restoring true justice for the people of Trinidad and Tobago."
