Media reports in Trinidad quote a government official as confirming that police arrested two top gang leaders at the Hyatt hotel in Port of Spain. The reports say the men were staying in the hotel's Presidential Suite, which costs TT$9,600 a night.
They are among 462 persons arrested since the declaration of a state of emergency last Sunday night.
Local media quoted an unnamed government spokesman as saying that the two men checked into the hotel Sunday night. The report said police were alerted after the men they engaged numerous call girls.
Police reportedly moved in and arrested the two men Friday, along with a female gang member. So far 190 members of gangs have been arrested.
A third gang leader was arrested in Tobago.
The Guardian newspaper reported that several gang members had been using the using as a sanctuary and living the high life, ordering champagne and food at the city's finest restaurants.
Attorney General Anand Ramlogan told reporters the wealth of some of the people involved in gangs is shocking.
"Check their bank accounts, the carat of gold they wear, the amount of house they buy in cash and the number of girlfriends they ‘minding.’ They have four and five residences and they move from place to place."
He explained that they have a structure, with dominant gangs having a leader and sub-commanders with separate “cells”.
He added, “The cash they get from crime, some are used to establish dance halls and nightclubs. They promote fetes and concerts, bringing in foreign artistes, and make millions. They sponsor community activities like basketball tournaments.
“Some form legitimate businesses and promise jobs. They don’t wear a jacket and tie but they have more money than the man in jacket and tie.”
He said casinos have reported earnings of $600,000 to $700,00 nightly from gang members.
