The Public Transit Service Corporation (PTSC) on Sunday handed letters to 334 bus drivers, making them permanent employees of the corporation.
The act was part of the corporation's 46th anniversary celebration.
"334 families need no longer unduly concerned about a monthly income and more importantly, 334 employees can now enjoy the benefits of permanent employment," acting Transport Minister Vasant Bharath said at the event to hand over the letters.
Bharath noted that the drivers deserved job security. He said Government has recognised the importance of improving working conditions to ensure sustainable national development.
The PTSC was established in 1965 and has been on aggressively redeveloping its services under its new chairman, Devant Maharaj. Many new rural routes have been established and there is now greater dialogue between the PTSC and its employees.
Bharath noted the improvement in service. "There has been an increase in the bus fleet from 119 in August (2010) to approximately 307 currently," he said.
