The National Infrastructure Development Company Limited (NIDCO) said on Monday it never got any undertaking from state-owned Petrotrin to use the company's jetty in Point Fortin to expedite the introduction of the Point Fortin Water Taxi service.
NIDCO made the statement in response to media reports that quoted Point Fortin Mayor Clyde Paul as saying that there is no risk to using the energy company's jetty for the service.
Paul was quoted in the Sunday Express on may 8 as saying, "The last government said we could dock at Trinmar's material jetty. Suddenly, it is risky to put it there. There is no risk."
In a media release, NIDCO said it "wishes to state emphatically" it never got any undertaking or approval from Petrotrin for the Water Taxi Service to use its jetty."
It added, "Further, in NIDCO's recent negotiations with Petrotrin, it was stated categorically by Petrotrin that the Trinmar jetty was not available to NIDCO."
NIDCO said it held a stakeholders' meeting at the Point Fortin Borough Council's Office on March 1, 2011, which was attended by city officials including the mayor, officials from Atlantic LNG, Petrotrin, the Works and transport Ministry and NIDCO.
It said the stakeholders decided at that meeting that the Clifton Hill Beach site is the preferred location for the proposed Point Fortin Water Taxi Terminal.
"The reasons stated were water depth, Town and Country Planning Division Approvals, Health, safety and Environmental issues and site access. At the Petrotrin jetty site there is presently an active oil well on location, which would not allow for the water taxi service to take place at that location," NIDCO said.
NIDCO added that it it currently seeking all the necessary environmental approvals and expects that engineering designs will be completed by September 2011, following which construction works will begin.
