Jack Warner went to Las Lomas Sunday to participate in the sod-turning ceremony for the Garazin Shouter Baptist Cathedral in the community. And he promised to donate more money in addition to the $100,000 he gave the community in March this year.
"As long as I remain in Government, I would go even further and tell you I will give you one month salary every year for the next four years.
"A lot of you do not know how much that will amount to, but what I do know is it will surpass the $100,000 I gave you on Liberation Day," the Works and Transport Minister said.
"My commitment to you is to fix your roads and make it in such a way that it can take more traffic easily and that is the pledge I make to you today. Next week I begin to build the walkover from where your school (is) supposed to be to the other side of the highway," he said.
Warner paid homage to the women and mothers who helped "keep the religion alive" and said he was moved to donate more money because of the sacrifices made by those in the Shouter Baptist community.
La Horquetta/Talparo MP Jairam Seemungal also offered help. He promised to donate $10,000 in building materials for the cathedral. Waldron Smart, chief executive officer of the Couva-Tabaquite-Talparo Regional Corporation, pledged $500 towards the Baptist Cathedral Fund.
The Garazin Shouter Baptist Cathedral will serve as the headquarters for the Spiritual Baptist Shouter community. It's the first of its kind to be built in Trinidad and Tobago. The community hopes to complete it by next March in time for the annual Shouter Baptist Liberation Day festivities.
Archbishop Terrance Gill was happy for the donations and support. "This is a great day for Shouter Baptist believers. The Lord has shown us many things and today we see the reality of the things coming into being," he said.
