The Government of Trinidad and Tobago is considering whether to refurbish the Port-of-Spain General Hospital or to build a new one in the city.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said Sunday the government will make a decision on that next month. She made the announcement after distributing hampers to mothers and mothers-to-be at the Mount Hope Maternity Hospital.
It was part of a Mothers' Day event that took the Prime Minister to five of the country's main hospitals, including the district hospital in Tobago.
In San Fernando, she spoke of plans for the services there.
“With respect to San Fernando, we are looking at a proposal to annex the hospital compound to the Chancery Lane building, which is already there. If we do that we can house about 60 per cent of the capacity of the San Fernando hospital. That should be completed within nine months,” she explained.
Persad-Bissessar said her visits to hospitals would give her and her team an opportunity to make better judgements about building new hospitals.
She cuddled babies and spoke with their parents. She was happy to spend the day with newsborns, she said, because they represent hope for the future.
In Tobago, Persad-Bissessar said the the new hospital is a top priority for the People’s Partnership Government, adding that her government is doing all it can to deliver the hospital as promised by June.
She acknowledged that staff were working under stressful conditions at the old Tobago hospital. "I want to salute all the health workers who are here today and every day that they continue to work.
"But we made a commitment that we would complete that new Scarborough Hospital and we are looking forward to that completion to bring a better health service to Tobago”, she said.
Persad-Bissessar reminded reporters that the dozens of hampers she distributed during the day did not cost the taxpayer anything. She said all were donated by private businesses.
