The Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS) hosted its 15th annual Chowtal Sammelan at Paravati Girls’ High School, Debe in preparation for the Hindu celebration of Holi (Phagwa), which is scheduled for later this month.
President of the SDMS South Regional Council, Jainarine Sharma, told media that he is pleased with the number of school children and younger people participating in the 2011 celebrations saw an increase in the number of young people participating.
The co-ordinator of the event, Prabha Sharma said: “This year we had more schools participating than usual. The tradition of Chowtal singing which heralds the Hindu celebration of Phagwa (festival of Spring) is alive and well."
Hundreds of school children from SDMS schools across the country participated. “I think the increase with the Chowtal comes from the Baal Vikas Chowtal competition that was held last week...Many of the schools get the opportunity to showcase their talent,” Sharma said.
Holi will be celebrated at venues across Trinidad and Tobago next Sunday.
