A media report Saturday said the Trinidad and Tobago cabinet has approved the payment of a $160,000 medical bill for former PM Basdeo Panday who underwent cornea eye surgery at a London hospital in November and December, last year.
Newsday said a note seeking the financial assistance for Panday went to cabinet on Thursday and was approved by all members present.
Newsday said Panday confirmed that he underwent surgery on both eyes late last year and is still experiencing problems with his right eye.
“I have not yet fuly recovered; I am still having problems with my right eye, and it all depends on what the doctor says. I may have to do additional surgery,” Panday said.
The paper quoted Panday as saying that he applied to government to assist with his medical expenses two to three weeks ago.
Similar payments have been made to former Prime Minister ANR Robinson.
