Health Minister Therese Baptiste-Cornelis told the Senate Tuesday Cabinet has agreed to appoint a committee to ensure that hospitals are safe and can withstand earthquakes and disasters.
"Cabinet has agreed to the establishment of a safe hospital committee along PAHO guidelines," she said.
"This committee will strengthen the infrastructure of all our health facilities and make recommendations and improvements. This will be a blueprint we shall follow in the construction of all our new hospital facilities.
"Additionally, all RHAs have developed disaster and emergency plans and have been requested to appoint disaster preparedness coordinators."
She said the Ministry has completed its one-year action agenda, and five-year strategic plan for 2011-2016 was completed in February. She also said that each RHA board has a 100-day action plan aimed at fixing problems in the health sector.
Baptiste-Cornelis noted that one problem in the system relating to patients care is that too often personnel are unable to find relevant files. She said in order to correct that, the sector will implement a "one patient, one record" system.
The Minister also confirmed that her ministry is reviewing the national maternal and child health manual in collaboration with key stakeholders.
