Carnival gives T&T economy $1B boost: PM Kamla

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar told reporters on Tuesday the $100 million investment in Carnival 2011 has given the national economy a boost of at least $1 billion.

"We have gotten economic benefit to the hotels, the services, transport, food, clothing, in every arena. I would want to say more than one billion dollars have come back into the country, and there have been so many foreigners back as well," she told reporters at the carnival venue at the Queen's Park Savannah.

She added that the country is now looking forward to introducing a Tobagio Carnival in October. The government is currently discussing this project with the Tobago House of Assembly.

The Prime Minister declared the 2011 Carnival a success and praised the police and soldiers for their hard work over the Carnival weekend.

"I don't think the police got any kind of flu for the Carnival. The police came out in full force, and I want to thank the police and the Defence Force and the soldiers; they have been out there in full force. The private security services, as well, have been working very hard," she said.
