Opposition Leader Keith Rowley declared Thursday that the PNM is "healed" and "back on track".
Rowley's comments came as he and his former arch-rival, former Prime Minister Patrick Manning, walked together and hugged each other in a public display of camaraderie in a two-hour walkabout in Manning's San Fernando East Constituency.
Manning greeted the new PNM leader "with a warm embrace and held hands" the Trinidad Guardian reported, adding that the scene received "cheers of scores of PNM supporters, including former government ministers."
It was the first time that the two hugged publicly since the party’s humiliating defeat in last year's general election in which Rolwey openly campaign against Manning who was the PNM leader at the time.
Both men had fallen out long before that, with their rift becoming full blown when Manning fired Rowley from the cabinet in 2008 after Rowley complained about the lack of oversight in work being conducted by UDeCOTT.
The paper reported that Manning took charge of the event urging supporters "to be on their best PNM behaviour". Both men walked together, greeting residents, including children, who came out to meet both of them.
Supporters told the Guardian their walk together shows that there is unity in the party.
In comments to the media Rolwey pretended that there was never a problem with Manning. “To the extent that if there is any healing to be done, we are healed as one party, one PNM, one membership and one country.
PNM officials on the walkabout included Amery Brown, Franklin Khan, Pennelope Beckles, Joan Yuille-Williams, Alice Hospedales and Mustapha Abdul-Hamid.
