North Stand ready, Grand stand by weekend: NCC chairman

Almost ready: The Grand Stand at the QP Savannah
The National Carnival Commission (NCC) has spent about $51 million so far to build the North and Grand Stands at the Queen’s Park Savannah for Carnival 2011.

The figure came from NCC Chairman Kenny da Silva, who told media Wednesday the North Stand, which is now finished, cost about $11 million. He said the stand is about the same size as the one that the Manning PNM administration demolished.

Da Silva said the Grand Stand would be ready by the weekend. That project, he said, cost about $40 million. It will accommodate 6,800 persons, nearly 2,000 more than the previous structure.

He also said the design allows a good vision of the stage from any seating position.
