More than 3,000 officials on Monday begin the task of a headcount in a national census that continues until until February 20.
The census will cover more than 350,000 households in the next six weeks, seeking to obtain a population count along with other important social and economic information on citizens. The information will be used for development planning.
Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Planning Ramona Ramdial launched the census Sunday, noting that the last census was done in 2000.
“It is an important exercise and should be taken seriously...In order to develop appropriate plans to move the country forward, the Government needs to have relevant and up to date information from households to be able to make the right decision that would improve the condition under which you live. It requires full co-operation of the entire population to ensure its success,” she said.
“The information would be used to ensure better access to health care and determine whether there are enough schools for children. Information of employment and levels of income which will enable the Government to better target and assist households in need of help,” Ramona said.
She assured citizens that all information collected will remain confidential. She noted that the questionnaire will have 61 questions and will take an estimated time of 30 minutes to complete for a family of four.
