Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley told reporters Monday a trip to India by a 20-member delegation led by Tourism Minister Rupert Griffith is a waste of taxpayers' money.
Speaking at a news conference Rowley said, "While we are undermining and gutting the only event that can attract tourists here, we are sending Minister Griffith of no consequence, halfway around the world, to waste taxpayers' money and to bring to us nothing of benefit."
Rowley was also critical of the new government's tourism policy as it relates to Tobago, saying he is not seeing any positive involvement or support for Tobago's tourism.
"If they think they are going to allow it to lag and die and then blame it on the Tobago House of Assembly, that is not going to help any of us," he said. He said such a political approach would have a serious outcome for both the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
Rowley also said he understands that the Government is preparing to undermine the process of constitutional reform for further internal self-government in Tobago.
He claimed that there is a conspiracy to pass a new bill to dissolve the THA and hold an election before it is due in 2013. "And in that election which they feel they would win, they would install a new Chief Secretary and put the TOP in office. That is what the Government is conspiring to do now," Rowley charged.
The PNM leader said his party would not allow "this political subterfuge to derail and frustrate the intentions of the people of Tobago...We will ensure that the will of the people prevail over the will of those who live for political expediency," he said.
