Retired policeman killed, gun stolen

Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of crime, Cecil Carrington, has been shot and killed and his licensed .38 revolver has been stolen. It happened at Carrington's hotel in Manzanilla early Wednesday morning.

Police believe the killers knew the former member of the Flying Squad.

Reports say a man who went to check on the cause of loud explosions at the hotel found Carrington lying face down in a pool of blood at his office with gunshot wounds. Witnesses report seeing a black SUV driving away from the scene.

Investigators have ruled out robbery as a motive since the killers did not take $2,000 that was in Carrington's office desk and $3,000 that was in his pants pocket. They only took the gun.

Carrington's close friend, ACP Margaret Sampson-Brown, who is in charge of community relations told reporters, "We have some information that would lead us closer in solving this crime.” Some reports indicate that the murder was captured on the hotel's close circuit security system.

Sampson-Brown told the Trinidad Guardian preliminary investigations suggest that the gunmen shot Carrington at point-blank range. There were no signs of a struggle, she said, adding that there were no signs of forced entry and that his vehicle was in the car park.

“There was no evidence that he gave a struggle...They just shot him."
