The government of Trinidad and Tobago is holding a special parliamentary caucus Monday to prepare for Wednesday's opening of Parliament.
Chief Whip Dr Roodal Moonilal has told media a top agenda items will be a discussion on a bill to establish a permanent Anti Corruption Commission and an amendment to the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Moonilal said the Anti Corruption Commission Bill is one of the most important pieces of legislation to be debated.
“This is a very bold initiative, and persons in public life who would read that bill will understand the depth government is going to protect the integrity of Government institutions and the sanctity of the trust placed in public officials.
"We are determined that this country will never face another Udecott or Calder Hart fiasco, and this legislation is one such step to prevent the erosion of our democratic institutions,” he told the paper.
He said the caucus will also deal with a package of Anti Crime Legislation, which includes the Anti Gang Bill, the Amendment to the Bail Act, the Elimination of Preliminary Inquiries, Amendment to the Firearms Act, and Legislation to Promote Transparency in the Procurement Practices.
The housing minister said Parliament will have a six-month "aggressive" legislative agenda during which it will deal with crime, the environment, financial services, poverty alleviation, education, and health.
He said Parliament will extend its sittings to twice a week to facilitate the passing of all the new bills and called on t.he opposition to work closely with the government to pass then bills for the benefit of the country.
Opposition leader Keith Rowley has criticised the government for introducing the anti corruption commission bill, saying there is enough legislation already for dealing with crime.
