Jack opens Aranguez overpass Tuesday

Transport Minister Jack Warner will open the Aranguez overpass on the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway Tuesday afternoon.

The project, which was started under the watch of Warner's predecessor in the Manning PNM administration, Colm Imbert, would allow a free flow of traffic on that part of the highway at the Aranguez and El Socorro intersections.

The opening of the overpass will cause a change of route for motorists heading into Aranjuez, El Socorro and surrounding areas along the highway with no traffic lights to interrupt the free flow of traffic at those points.

Officials say a number of traffic signs will be installed in the area in order to direct drivers into the proper lanes. They are expecting some confusion and traffic congestion as the new traffic flow system gets going.

Imbert has called the overpass a "bridge to nowhere" claiming that access roads leading to the overpass have not been completed. Officials say all but one of the connector roads are ready. The one still under construction is the El Socorro North and the Aranjuez connector road, which will be finished by March.

The overpass comprises of 54-metre single-span structure that will accommodate four lanes of traffic—two lanes going north to south and two lanes going south to north.

The French company VINCI Construction was awarded the $166.7 million by the former administration on March 12, 2009. Local contractors Junior Sammy and Coosals were also involved in the construction. The project is a continuation of the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway/Uriah Butler Interchange.
