Griffith to lead 20-member tourism team to India

Tourism Minister Dr Rupert Griffith is leaving for India Friday with a 20-member delegation on a mission to attract Indian investment and tourism to Trinidad and Tobago.

Foreign Minister Dr Suruj Rambachan on Thursday confirmed it at a news conference following the weekly cabinet meeting. However he did not answer questions about the trip.

"I think that's a question better directed to the Minister of Tourism, who will tell you the objectives behind his trip and so on," Rambachan told reporters.

Griffith was unavailable to comment and media reports say all attempts to reach him failed.

Rambachan noted that government has already made it easier for some foreign nationals to come to Trinidad and Tobago. Last month cabinet approved a proposal to allow Indian and Russian nationals to enter the country without visas. This would be on a 90-day trial period.

Rambachan told reporters immigration officers still have the authority to deny persons entry into this country if they have good reason to do so.

With respect to India he said there is "tremendous interest" there in the information technology (IT) industry from potential business people who might want to invest in the eTecK Tamana Park in Wallerfield.
