Public Utilities Minister Emmanuel George said Monday people in south and central Trinidad can expect more water during the dry season.
George spoke with reporters during a tour of the Pointe-a-Pierre and Tabaquite constituencies.
“We have a lot of old mains that are bursting constantly and we heard over the years WASA is losing nearly 40 to 50 per cent of water that it produces," he said. “If we lose that much water it means that we have to change all the mains instead of building more desalination plants.”
The minister promise to save water by replacing old mains. “That way we can save the water that we produce in dams, reservoirs and wells so we can service the population,” he said.
George suggested that people should get proper storage facilities and promised to everything possible to ensure that south and central regions get water twice a week. He explained Government had borrowed $1.3 billion to deal with the water problems.
The minister said there are plans to make sure that production facilities, like Navet, Caroni and Arena operate at maximum potential and urged the public to exercise patience while the old pipelines are being replaced.
