The government of Trinidad and Tobago will begin construction of the south campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) within six months.
Tertiary Education Minister Fazal Karim made the announcement Wednesday. He said cabinet has already approved the use of 100 acres of land for the campus north of the Debe High School. The lands were owned by Caroni (1975) Limited which was closed by the previous Manning PNM administration.
Karim said UWI plans to begin courses for the LLB programme in San Fernando this September. The venue has not yet been determined, he said.
The minister also said cabinet has approved a plan to establish a Workforce Development and Technology Centre at Petrotrin's compound at Clarke Road, Penal, noting that negotiations for the project are currently in progress and construction of the centre should begin before the new fiscal year.
Karim said he plans to ask for cabinet approval to expand GATE to include technical and vocational studies.
