American Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton has described Sir Ellis Clarke as "an ambassador, a humble public servant and the consummate statesman."
In extending condolences to the people of Trinidad and Tobago on behalf of President Barack Obama and the people of the United States on the passing Sir Ellis, Clinton said, "Sir Ellis was a towering figure on the Trinidad and Tobago landscape who helped lead the country to independence."
She added, "Sir Ellis embodied the values that we should all strive to uphold" noting that "his passing will be felt not only in Trinidad and Tobago, but around the world."
