Caribbean Airlines (CAL) could be facing a million dollar bill for lawyers in its fight with fired CEOP Captain Ian Brunton, according to a report in the Sunday Guardian.
CAL has retained English QC Andrew Mitchell and the local law firm of KR Lalla. Mitchell has represented CAL chairman George Nicholas III in the controversial legal battle against Dr Krishna Persad for control of Mora Ven Holdings Limited.
He has represented Nicholas at the High Court and at the Privy Council in that matter. He has also represented former Chief Justice Sat Sharma But at the Privy Council in the case brought against the state against Sharma.
The Guardian newspaper claims that Mitchell's fees range from £100,000 (TT$1,000,000) per brief, excluding retainer fees.
Om Lalla, who has represented Minister of Works and Transport Jack Warner for over ten years will be instructing Mitchell in the case. Lalla is also the attorney for Fifa and T&T Football Federation.
Nicholas is at loggerheads with Warner, who is the line minister for the airline.
However Lalla told the Sunday Guardian his work on the CAL case presents no conflict. "I remain as one of Mr Warner’s attorneys. I have been retained by CAL. The whole issue is about a chief executive officer that was terminated and it is the company that has retained my services," the paper quoted Lalla saying.
"I do not see any issue for a conflict of interest to arise. It is a company taking a decision; it is a corporate issue and not a personal issue.”
Legal sources say Attorney General Anand Ramlogan has the authority to decide who will represent Caribbean Airlines (CAL) in the case against Brunton, who is suing the airline for wrongful dismissal.
