The Congress of the People (COP) on Wednesday extended its congratulations to Energy Minister Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan, on her recent appointment as Alternative President of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).
The appointment, which takes effect from 1st January, 2011, is for one year,
Seepersad-Bachan will undertake the role of President if the incumbent, Sameh Fahmy, Egypt’s Energy Minister, is unable to carry out his functions.
In a media relase COP said the appoint is a significant landmark as GECF members control almost 70 per cent of existing natural gas reserves.
Trinidad and Tobago stands to benefit in many strategic ways, COP said noting that the energy sector continues to play a vital role in the national economy and will continue to do so for a long time to come.
"Therefore this appointment places T&T at the forefront of the leading global natural gas organization and allows us to influence decisions that will maximally benefit our citizens," the party said.
