PM promises more police patrols; pledges full resources for security personnel

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar promised on Tuesday greater police visibility across the country to deal with the crime problem.

She made the promise after a meeting with heads of various law enforcement divisions in Port of Spain.

Persad-Bissessar, in her capacity as head of the National Security Council, was accompanied by National Security Minister Brigadier John Sandy, Minister in the Ministry of National Security Subhas Panday, Attorney General Anand Ramlogan and Legal Affairs Minister Prakash Ramadhar.

The Ministers are members of an inter-ministerial team that is responsible for developing a national crime plan.

Persad-Bissessar told reporters she is pleased with the initiatives outlined to her by the security heads.

Reporters asked her opinion of the performance of Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs and Deputy Commissioner Jack Ewatski, both of whom are highly paid Canadians.

"There is always room for improvement. I can do better, we can all do better, and that's what we are all about," she said. "We are all trying. We are working together; we are speaking to each other and let's just do better.

"I would say further that I would not say that I am dissatisfied but I believe we can improve, we all can improve. Every officer here, including myself."

Persad-Bissessar also pledged to make available all the resources needed by the security agencies to get the job done.

Gibbs said there will soon be improvements in the crime situation. "As the Honourable Prime Minister said, there will be higher visibility and there would be some other things that we would be doing as well...

"I think together we can make a very impactable difference, again, both in the immediate and short terms and in the long term and it was very, again, very heart felt, when I looked around and see the support of every one here to help win this battle, win this war against crime," the commissioner said.
