He said the estimate is that this project would cost about $500 million for houses in Golgonda, Union Hall and Princes Town, which will use solar energy. He added that a wind farm would provide energy for a housing project in Mayaro.
The minister expects to begin construction of 1,200 new housing units in January with funds from the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) and revenue from sales of HDC houses.
“We are looking at an estimated cost of $500 million to complete the construction of these houses, but we are going to be very cautious not make the same mistakes as the previous administration made relating to the faulty work done,” Moonilal explained.
Moonilal said he hopes to see greater use of green energy sources to make the homes environmental friendly. He said solar energy would be beneficial for people who are currently burdened with costly powers bills.
He also spoke of the installation of WiFi technology at the new houses, saying “The housing sector is ready to ignite to move with the next cycle of home construction.”
