Canada-T&T sign "Open Skies" agreement to give more travel felxibility

Canada has signed open skies air transportation agreements with Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago that give airlines more flexibility in selecting new routes, schedules.

The agreements are being applied on an administrative basis, which allows new air services to begin immediately.

Trinidad and Tobago's national carrier, Caribbean Arilines, has controlling shares in Air Jamaica so the deals give greater flexibility for CAL to adjust its schedules for both airlines that operate services from Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

Canada also has Open skies agreements with Barbados and the Dominican Republic. It now has agreements with 11 nations - Ireland, Iceland, New Zealand, Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, South Korea, El Salvador, Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica;.

Commenting on the deal with Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica, Canada's International Trade Minister Peter Van Loan said, "These agreements will reinforce Canada's commercial relationship with two of our most significant trade partners in the Caribbean community."

He added, "Canada would like to build on this momentum as we move forward in our negotiations toward a free trade agreement with the Caribbean Community.”

Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Chuck Strahl said, “I am very pleased that expanded arrangements have been reached with these two long-standing and important bilateral air transport partners in the Caribbean."
