Attorney General Anand Ramlogan has confirmed that police will investigate allegations of corruption at the Unemployment Relief Programme (URP).
In a media released Tuesday, Ramlogan said the Anti-Corruption Investigations Bureau (ACIB) will investigate the allegations of "ghost gangs" within the URP with some of the people being linked with criminal activities.
"The investigations are at a sensitive stage right now and, as such, it would be inappropriate to reveal details of issues and matters being investigated as it stands to compromise these investigations," Ramlogan said.
He promised that once the investigation is complete the files would go to Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard who will then take whatever action he deems necessary.
The Ministry of Labour has been conducting a review of the operations of the program since the change of government in May this year to ensure that the URP fulfills its mandate of creating short-term employment for citizens.

An inter-ministerial team comprising Labour Minister Errol McLeod, Minister of the People Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh and Housing Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal has concluded that the program should be "restructured as a matter of priority" to ensure it meets its original mandate.
