UNC stands behind leader; calls Manning a "coward" and demands an apology

The United National Congress (UNC) is standing by its leader and has condemned former Prime Minister Patrick Manning for attacking PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar with respect to the construction of her home in Philippine, south Trinidad.

Several constituencies have written letters of support for Persad-Bissessar, while condemning Manning for his "vile slanderous and malicious attacks". Oropouche East and West began the process.

The party has asked all constituencies to "be heard" on the matter.

The following are taken from some of the letters:

"Mr. Manning should be mandated by parliament to publicly apologize to the Hon. Prime Minister...Our Prime Minister is doing everything possible to undo the country's ills and to move us forward as a productive and prosperous nation"
Diego Martin North East Constituency

"Mr Manning showed the nation that he is indeed a coward by abusing his parliamentary privileges to launch his verbal attack. His strategy was aimed at diverting this focus of the national public from the real issue of wire tapping and invasion of privacy of high profile law abiding citizens.
Tabaquite Constituency Executive

"The Siparia Constituency Executive totally support the Hon. Prime Minister. Mrs Bissessar in her honest and sincere decision to build a home for her family with her private funds and not tax payers money."
Siparia Constituency Executive

"We call on Patrick Manning to desist from his baseless attempt to discredit the good reputation of this law abiding family of the Prime Minister...We call on Patrick Manning to apologize to the Prime Minister and the nation for his malicious attack in his vain attempt to bring this family name into disrepute."
Barataria/San Juan Constituency Executive

An internal memo from the party's headquarters has described Manning's charges as "an outrageous attempt to malign the character of our Political Leader" and urges members to "stand up and be heard".
