United States of America Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago Beatrice Wilkinson Welters met with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Friday to discuss U.S. assistance to CARICOM countries affected by Tropical Storm Tomas.
The visit followed Persad-Bissessar's meeting in Washington on Wednesday with U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.
The Prime Minister thanked the diplomat and the Embassy for the assistance given to the Trinidad and Tobago government in facilitating meetings with Clinton and other senior American officials during the PM's three-day trip to the United States.
She also used the opportunity to discuss aid and security to Trinidad and Tobago and the region, which were discussed with Clinton.
The ambassador updated Persad-Bissessar on what the U.S. is doing for St. Lucia and St. Vincent in the aftermath of Tomas.
The U.S. is providing funding and supplies to both islands. The supplies include include 1,056 hygiene kits, 1,000 water containers, 1,000 blankets and 100 rolls of plastic sheeting.
Washington is partnering with the government of Trinidad and Tobago on several major national security initiatives. General Doug Fraser, who is in charge of the U.S. Southern Command, which includes Trinidad and Tobago, will be visiting Port of Spain in December.
