Letter: Settling debts to Contractors

When I hear Minister of Finance assure us, in a most patronising tone, that there was no need to issue Bonds to contractors, because he would settle these in cash, I was pleasantly surprised, as all must have been.

This prompted talk-show hosts to comment on the apparent "disconnect" between Works Minister Jack Warner ("we have no money, please take bonds"), and Mr. Dookeran.

However, all should remember, including Mr. Dookeran, that it was he who first announced, upon learning of the debts to contractors a couple of months ago, that these debts would be settled by issuing bonds.At that time contractors rejected the offer, which they later seemed prepared ready to accept.

This just to keep the record straight.
