PM hosts reception in NY Friday, meets UN Sec. Gen. Saturday

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar met with fellow Caricom leaders in New York Friday afternoon to discuss matters pertinent to the 14-member regional grouping.

The meeting also discussed issues aired by the respective countries at the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Summit and the on-going UN General Assembly (UNGA).

Later Friday she will host a reception at the Trinidad and Tobago consulate to mark Republic Day.

She has a meeting Saturday with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to discuss her government’s thrust toward poverty reduction, improved health care and expanded educational opportunities.

And later Saturday she will be honoured at a reception hosted by U.S. Congressman Edolphus Towns and Congresswoman Yvette Clarke.

Guyanese President Bharrat Jagdeo and St. Lucian Prime Minister Stephenson King are scheduled to deliver addresses Friday. Haitian President Rene Preval is also scheduled to address Friday’s lengthy sitting of the assembly.

Speaking earlier, British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg pledged increased international aid from his country.

Clegg also said that now, more than ever before, the world needs to work through the United Nations to deal with global challenges.

The UN Secretary General has talked tough at Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who on Thursday accused the United States of masterminding the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. There have been street protests against Ahmadinejad.
