Minister of the People Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh has promised to "fast track" help for hundreds of people hard hit by what has been described as the worst floods to ever hit Trinidad and Tobago.
The minister told reporters Wednesday, "We have as much of our human resources out there, doing the assessments and they are awaiting the reports and we will bring relief to these people faster in a short space of time."
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and members of her Cabinet have met with officials of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) to determine the government's response to widespread flooding.
An inter-ministerial team has requested speedy action from Ramadharsingh to help victims of the floods.
Ramadharsingh's officials have visited flooded areas and informed victims of the grants that are available, including money for damage to homes and to replace children's schoolbooks.
He said the private sector and individuals are also helping with with hampers and other forms of assistance.
Tabaquite MP Dr Surujrattan Rambachan said one person donated 40 mattresses and two others gave 160 hampers for flood victims in his constituency.
Rambachan said the ODPM has not been acting with the expected urgency to deal with the problems.
