Family, friends and members of the UNC gathered at St Agnes Anglican Church in St. James Friday for a Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Dorothy Cummings.
Dorothy died earlier this week after a prolonged illness. The dedicated UNC 'lieutenant' was 73.
The UNC mourners included Jack Warner, Dr Glen Ramadharsingh, Winston "Gypsy" Peters, Wade Mark, Dr Daphne Phillips, Jennifer Jones-Kernahan and Khadeeja Ameen-Rostant.
Peters described Dorothy as a person who was "full of life, full of joy. She was the life of the party.” Warner said he was happy that Dorothy was able to see her party triumph and get into government.
Her son, Keith De Souza delivered the eulogy. He remembered his mom as a hardworking woman who made sure her children were disciplined.
"Dorothy did it her way...I saw how she struggled to raise us. I didn’t want to struggle that much. So I worked hard. She did all she could possibly do for her children. She did it without an education.
"Anything that could be sold Dorothy sold it. There wasn’t anything that she didn’t sell," De Souza told the congregation.
He spoke of her political passion. "She grew up in politics," he said, noting that she was a dedicated 'child' of the Williams political era who became disenchanted with the PNM and crossed over and joined the UNC.
"When I hear Dorothy crossed the floor, I couldn’t believe it. I said: 'That is unfathomable. Mummy is a die hard PNM'...She didn’t like what was happening. She is not a hypocrite. If she didn’t like something, she would be sure to let you know," De Souza said.
"I am missing my mother," he said. "There is no one to talk politics with. I can’t see Dorothy on TV again." De Souza begged the nation not to forget Dorothy.
