Violence, state of emergency as Jamaica tries to extradite drug kingpin to US

Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding Sunday night described as a “calculated assault on the authority of the state,” the violence that has erupted in the West Kingston constituency as law enforcement authorities seek to execute a warrant for the arrest of a man wanted in the United States on drugs and gun running charges.

"Since this morning, violent, orchestrated attacks have been launched on a number of police stations. Two members of the security forces have been shot and injured," Golding said in a radio and television broadcast on Sunday.

He warned that the threats that have emerged against the safety of all Jamaicans would be driven back, with strong and decisive action by the security forces.

The government declared a state of emergency for the Corporate Area on Sunday after violence erupted in the volatile West Kingston constituency with angry mobs setting fire to a police station and firebombing another.
