The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) has confirmed that 722,322 citizens voted in Monday's general election in Trinidad and Tobago - that's 69.45 per cent of the electorate of more than one million.
It is the highest voter turnout in more than a decade and shows a record 432,026 votes for the UNC’s five-party coalition. The PNM won 285,354 votes. That translates into a resounding victory for the coalition with 59.81 per cent of the popular vote.
The statistitics show that the Partnership received the largest number of votes ever cast for a political party in Trinidad and Tobago. The previous highs was 308,807 for the PNM in 2002 and 307,791 for the UNC in 2000.
In the 2007 general election the PNM won 26 of the 41 seats in Parliament with 299,813 votes. It lost the support of 14,459 in Monday's election while the combined opposition increased its votes.
In 2007 the UNC and COP together got 342, 446 votes meaning it ganed 89,580 votes.
UNC chairman Jack Warner got 18,767 in Chaguanas West, the higest number of votes in the country, followed by Roodal Moonilal in Oropouche East, who received 17,927. Prime Minister-elect Kamla Persad-Bissessar (Siparia) got 15,808.
On the PNM side, Alicia Hospedales in Arouca/Maloney won the highest number of votes in her party with 11,467 followed Donna Cox who got 10,797 in Laventille East/Morvant.
PNM leader Patrick Manning 9,736 votes in Fernando East, which he has represented since 1971.
