Not true! Ramesh, Panday deny moves to form new party

Former UNC leader Basdeo Panday has said forming a new party is not on his mind "at the moment". But he did not say if such an issue would be an option at a later date.

Panday was responding to news reports that a lawyer had been asked to help draft a constitution for the new political party that he would lead.
Speaking on national television in Trinidad Wednesday night Panday said, "There is no truth in that."

He added, "What I can tell you is that a lot of people, particularly those who were not allowed to vote in the elections, have been calling for a new political party, but that is not on my mind at the moment."

Panday has insisted that the election that saw him rejected as political leader in favour of Siparia MP Kamla Persad-Bissessar was not fair and that many people who supported him were denied their right to vote.

He has demanded that the party establish a public inquiry into the matter. However he has refused to take any legal action.

Tabaquite MP Ramesh L. Maharaj shares Panday's view about alleged irregularities in the internal election of January 24.

But he has distanced himself from Panday, telling reporters he has held no talks with Panday.

Maharaj said he believes that the media reports about a new political party were orchestrated by "some official in the party" who wants to make confusion.

The article about forming a new party said lawyer Ricky Harnanan helping to draft a constitution for a new party. But Maharaj said he spoke with the lawyer, who denied it.

"He told me he sent out a letter today (Wednesday) to the members of the media denying any accuracy," Maharaj said on TV, adding that "there has been no discussion with Mr. Panday along those lines. As a matter of fact this story comes to me as a national joke."
