Abdullah trial begins March 11

Lawyers for trade unionist David Abdullah on Wednesday withdrew an application to challenge the constitutionality of the obstruction charge brought against him, meaning the matter could go to trial.

The trial is scheduled to begin on March 11.

Prakash Ramadhar and Douglas Mendes told senior magistrate Lucina Cardenas-Ragoonanan the defence was withdrawing the application, so the evidence in the matter could be "ventilated in court for the public to know" the circumstances under which police arrested Abdullah.

Police arrested the president of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions and Non-Governmental Organisations (Fitun) on December 18 and charged him with obstructing the free passageway in violation of the Highway.

It happened during a march outside the Red House in Port of spain to protest the proposed real estate taxm, which was subsequently passed by Parliament. He was part of a protest by a group called the People’s Democracy.
