Jack Warner has made it official. He is supporting Kamla Persad-Bissessar for the leadership of the United National Congress.
The Chaguanas West MP made the commitment from Dubai Wednesday in a letter to Persad-Bissessar.
The letter is transcribed below:
"Let me take this opportunity to signal publicly my support to you upon your decision last Saturday to put your hat in the ring and vie for the position of leader of the United National Congress.
"With bated breath, the national community awaited this announcement and now that it has come there is renewed hope in the land, for a credible leader has emerged who is capable of emancipating this country from the jaws of this failed PNM government.
"John Quincy Adams, the second President of the United States of America observed that “if your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” In the words of President Adams, Kamla, you are more than qualified to take the reins of leadership.
"Over the past years the UNC in Parliament has become two benches of broken dreams and forlorn hopes. I believe that you now have the chance to change that forever.
"History is in the making. You now also have the opportunity to do it twice: firstly by emerging as the first female candidate to lead the UNC into local and national elections and secondly by being the first female to be elected Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.
"You are warned, however, that the armies of the status quo will treat you as something of a dirty joke. That is their natural and first weapon. So my only advice to you my sister, at this stage, is not to lose focus.
"Ralph Nader, a US attorney, author, lecturer and political activist noted that the function of leadership is to produce more leaders. Until today not one leader has emerged under the stewardship of the Honourable Basdeo Panday.
"Be the leader for which the UNC and the country are presently crying.
"In the process and in the campaign, however, do not denigrate yourself and engage in gutter politics. Do not bring yourself into disrepute and respond in kind to personal attacks leveled against you.
"The temptation to respond in kind will be great but I urge you to maintain your dignity and do not get distracted. Stay focused and rid the Party and the national community of the evil that is presently scourging the land.
"My constituents in Chaguanas West have asked me, and have in fact insisted that I go public with my support and, moreover, that I also say that Chaguanas West is fully behind you. I do so now.
"I am confident of your victory on January 24, 2010 and I know this country is ready to vote for its first female Prime Minister.
"Change is here, my sister, change is here."
Jack Warner Member of Parliament for Chaguanas West
